| Danny stratched at his right wrist. He separated the unbottoned cuff of his sleeve, and pushed down his watch revealing two small holes which were assumed fang marks. He let out a deep breath, and carressed the scars with his index finger. "I was once," he said sofly.
Everything around him suddenly seemed louder. Even his breathing seemed to be deafening. He became overly-aware of everything he was doing-- how he was shaking his leg, and how he was biting his lips. Carey's laughter had subsided, thankfully. His out burst was unexpected, and had Danny rather shaken up.
Presently, he calmned down. Everything was back to normal. He was still touching his scars, but his leg had stopped shaking. Telling someone--anyone-- that you weren't human is a scary thing. Carey's sudden laughter made Danny uncertain of how he would react about him telling him exactly what he was.
| 6.)
So, it was done. The question had been popped, like a horrible mockery of proposition.
Carey had thought it would feel strange, or awkward, or painful -- something negative, anyway. What he hadn't anticipated was the wave of utter, complete relief that slammed into him after Danny said the words.
He was laughing aloud before he even knew he was doing it -- and why not? He'd been hunted all his life, but when someone finally pointed out that he wasn't human, it got compared to coming out of the closet. Carey couldn't help it; he knew he must sound like an idiot, but the sheer absurd irony was making him feel higher than a big lungful of nitrous oxide.
"N-no," Carey managed at last, waving away the strange looks other passengers were giving him. With one great final effort, he pulled himself together and shook his head to clear it. When he finally looked up at Danny, his smile was calm and collected, much more like his usual self.
"No," he repeated quietly, so as not to attact attention. The ice was broken, so it seemed stupid to be anything but straightforward. "I'm not human, and neither are you. Am I right?"
There were a thousand other questions Carey wanted to ask, but he held his tongue and waited to see Danny's reaction to his outburst.
| 5.)
Danny didn't really know what he should do or say. Should he just come out and say it? Should he give it time to dwell? The latter seemed more sensible, but Danny knew his patience wouldn't allow him to wait.
The knots in his stomach twisted and wrenched everytime he tried to open his mouth to talk. It reminded him of when he had come out of the closet to his parents. M-mom....dad....umm...errr....uhhh. When he finally managed to do it, the outcome hadn't been nearly as bad as he had figured it would be. Maybe this would be the same. Besides, wasn't it human nature to overreact about a situation? It would have to be said sooner or later. Why not sooner?
"I, umm... Are you?... What I'm trying to say is... um... Hell, this is worse than coming out of the closet," he managed. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't figure out the right way to ask him. Was there a right way to ask him?
Finally, he gave up thinking about it. Danny looked at Carey's hands, which were busy nervously entertaining themselves. Quietly he asked, "You're not human are you?" The question sounded more like a statement than Danny had intented, and it only made him more anxious.
| 4.)
Carey looked up in surprise and gratitude when Danny moved. Usually people didn’t notice his anxiety; they got in his face and never cared one whit how he felt about it. It was a large part of what made him so twitchy.
But Danny’s considerate gesture touched Carey in ways that he couldn’t describe. To be given space -- to be allowed to breathe and think on his own terms -- was something Carey had always struggled with. And here, after everything that had happened and despite the terrible curiosity that was obviously hounding him, Danny had given Carey that space that the teacher had always had to fight for.
Carey cracked a little inside; with every move that Danny made, he fell a little more in love.
He took a few deep breaths and looked up again, meeting Danny’s eyes just for a second. “I’m sorry,” he murmured, “I didn’t mean to sound cold. I’m... still getting my head around what happened, okay?” The shadow of a smile flickered across his face, in an attempt to reassure Danny.
| 3.)
It was so obvious that Carey was hiding something deep; he made the typical nervous gestures and twitches. Danny thought hard about what he should say and how he should say it. There was so much he wanted to tell him, but didn’t want him to know.
But all of the pieces fall into place. Maybe I’m being over-analytical, but I can sense something about him. Something that’s not.... human.
“Well, I think we may have a little more in common than we realize,” he said quietly. He looked over at his usual seat, and soon scooted over to it.
